Why short links get blocked — and how to fix it

Short links get blocked because shortening hides the destination, and spam campaigns exploited that for years. Filters now score short links more harshly, and they usually block an entire shortener domain rather than individual links. So the fix is reputational: use a shortener that removes abuse quickly and shows no ads, use a descriptive custom alias, and keep the destination clean.

Why short links attract more suspicion than plain links

Nothing about a redirect is inherently dangerous. The problem is informational: a filter examining example.com/abc123 cannot tell whether it leads to a news article or a credential-harvesting page. A plain address gives a filter something to score — domain age, reputation, category, keywords in the path. A short link gives it almost nothing.

Faced with that, filters do the rational thing and score by what they can see: the shortener's domain. Which produces the central dynamic of this whole topic.

You inherit the reputation of everyone else using the same shortener. Blocking is nearly always applied per-domain, not per-link. One large abusive campaign through a service can get every link from it flagged, including yours.

This is why the choice of shortener matters far more than anything you do with an individual link.

The five places short links get blocked

Email spam filters

Most common and most costly. Filters weigh short links as a mild negative and combine that with sending reputation, authentication and content. A short link alone rarely triggers a spam verdict; a short link plus a cold list plus urgent wording routinely does.

Social platforms

Most maintain their own blocklists of shortener domains and adjust them frequently. Some suppress reach rather than blocking outright — harder to detect than a straight rejection.

Chat & messaging apps

Some strip link previews from shorteners, some warn before opening, a few block specific domains entirely. Behaviour varies widely and changes without notice.

Managed network filters

Schools, workplaces and public networks commonly block shorteners as a category. This is deliberate policy, not a mistake, and not something to route around.

Security software

Endpoint protection and browser safe-browsing lists sometimes flag shortener domains after a malware campaign runs through them. These usually clear once the service removes the abuse — if it does.

How to keep your short links deliverable

  1. Pick a shortener that polices itself

    The single biggest factor. A service that suspends phishing and malware quickly keeps its domain reputation clean; one that ignores abuse gets its whole domain blocked, and takes your links with it.

  2. Avoid ad-funded shorteners entirely

    Services showing an interstitial or countdown page are heavily represented on blocklists, because that ad slot is itself an abuse vector. They are also most likely to be categorised as spam by default.

  3. Use a descriptive custom alias

  4. Keep the destination clean

    HTTPS, a valid certificate, a real privacy policy, working contact details. Filters score the destination once they resolve it, and a weak destination undoes everything else.

  5. Do not pair short links with spam-trigger wording

    Urgency, all-caps, money claims and “verify your account” phrasing combined with a short link is the exact signature filters are trained on.

  6. Never blast one link to a large cold list

    A sudden spike of clicks from unrelated recipients on a brand-new link is a strong spam signal.

  7. In email, prefer your own domain

    An authenticated link on a domain you control, with SPF, DKIM and DMARC in place, beats any shortener. Use shorteners in email for convenience, not as a deliverability strategy.
